This study explores the structure, growth, and future of transnational human travel and communication, revealing that while people increasingly traverse borders, our understanding of this interconnected world remains limited. Contrary to the notion of a fully globalized society, the analysis of eight mobility and communication types—ranging from migration and tourism to social media interactions—demonstrates that our behaviors are more regionalized than globalized. Emanuel Deutschmann argues that transnational activities are primarily influenced by geographic distance rather than political, cultural, or economic factors. He identifies a consistent spatial structure in transnational human activity that adheres to a power law, a pattern also observed in the movements of various animal species. This stability persisted from 1960 to 2010, revealing proximity-induced regionalism as a key characteristic of global networks. Deutschmann's findings challenge existing research perspectives and suggest that the emergence of a truly global society is improbable. By emphasizing the importance of cross-border interactions in a spatially fragmented world, the study sheds light on the dynamics of transnational human activity and its implications for future connectivity.
