This work offers an insightful exploration of how Guangzhou's vibrant musical culture reflects the city's distinctive cosmopolitanism. As a major Chinese city with a booming economy, Guangzhou attracts rural citizens seeking better opportunities and global corporations aiming to establish a presence in one of the world’s largest markets. This dynamic environment has fostered a flourishing music scene that rivals that of Beijing, yet it uniquely embodies Guangzhou's international character. Historically a key player in China’s maritime Silk Road, the city is now a melting pot where new migrants blend diverse Chinese folk traditions into the local music landscape. Ethnomusicologist Adam Kielman delves into this scene through the lens of two bands, Wanju Chuanzhang (Toy Captain) and Mabang (Caravan), which connect their rural origins with contemporary cosmopolitan influences. Their music, featuring popular Jamaican reggae beats and lyrics in regional dialects, captures the interplay of global and local identities. This juxtaposition reflects the demographic and political changes occurring in Guangzhou and beyond. Bridging various disciplines, Kielman investigates the cultural implications of evolving notions of self, space, and community in a rapidly changing China.
