More about the book

Persecuted for his political activism, Emmanuel Mbolela left the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2002, embarking on a six-year search for a new home. His journey was fraught with challenges, including corrupt customs officials, duplicitous smugglers, Saharan ambushes, and harsh living conditions. Yet, amidst the turmoil, he also experienced moments of calm, finding solace in a migrants' hideout managed by community leaders who were both supportive and opportunistic. Upon reaching Morocco, he faced nearly four years of being stranded, relentlessly pursuing the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for asylum certificates, only to find their offices perpetually closed when he arrived. His narrative reflects both personal and collective struggles, highlighting the unique horrors faced by female migrants, who simultaneously embody resilience against systemic violence. While still stateless, Mbolela became an advocate, founding the Association of Congolese Refugees and Asylum Seekers in Morocco to champion migrant rights. After obtaining political asylum in the Netherlands in 2008, he continued his activism. Through his story, Mbolela offers a direct, clear-eyed perspective on a global crisis often overlooked.
