Special Agent Jack Hunter's thirst for adventure leads him on a fantastic journey across the universe. A mission to study an intelligent alien species results in clues to his own origins, information about his birth parents, and something powerful inside of himself that he had never known existed. Hunter's team's mission would be to attempt to solve the mystery: How could an extraterrestrial species be so like Humanity? When the team (including an FBI agent, an astrophysicist, a former US Marshal, and a medical geneticist) assimilate into an alien society, they become entangled in an escalating political situation, culminating in the assassination and overthrow of a realm's monarchy that takes Hunter's mission in a markedly different direction. And he uncovers information along the way that is impossible for him to understand.
