More about the book
In a reimagined 1953 London, history has been rewritten following a Grand Alliance between Great Britain and Germany. With George VI assassinated, Edward VIII reigns as king, but true power lies with Alfred Rosenberg, Britain's Protector. He envisions a perfect society, particularly focused on the roles of women, who are categorized into castes based on various attributes. Rose, a member of the elite Gelis caste, works at the Ministry of Culture, tasked with altering classic literature to align with the regime's ideals—transforming characters like Jane Eyre and Elizabeth Bennet into more submissive figures. When Rose is called to the Cultural Commissioner's office, she learns of rising insurgencies marked by graffiti quoting subversive lines from female authors. The source of this rebellion is suspected to be Widowland, a slum for childless women over fifty, known for its defiance. Before the Coronation ceremony, Rose must infiltrate Widowland to uncover the truth behind the unrest. As she delves deeper, she stumbles upon revelations that could not only challenge the Protectorate's authority but also lead to her own transformation.
