The address on The Roman Catholic Church and the School Question was delivered during the notable text-book controversy in Boston in the autumn of 1888 and was published as a pamphlet at that time. Another address, discussing the role of parochial schools in America, was presented at the National Educational Association in Nashville the following July. The writer chose not to publish this address initially, wishing to enhance the section on moral training in public schools. However, the opportunity for revision never arose, resulting in the address being presented here largely unchanged.
