This work dismantles the myth of Woody Guthrie as the quintessential American "ramblin' man," revealing an artist for whom intimacy was vital to political struggle. Often portrayed as a folk hero fighting for working-class interests, Guthrie is celebrated for his politically charged songs. However, much of his unpublished work highlights the significance of intimacy in both his personal and political life. Through his music and relationships, Guthrie aimed to dismantle bodily shame and celebrate the beauty of sexuality. He believed that emotional and physical connections were essential for combating the loneliness and isolation fostered by capitalist cultures. By fostering deep human connections, he argued, society could resist the rise of fascism. Yet, his exploration of intimacy and sexuality often clashed with societal norms, leading to an obscenity arrest and institutionalization for therapy. Despite these challenges, Guthrie continued to challenge societal conventions through his art.
