More about the book

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award finalist, this stunning novel tells the intertwined stories of a blind French girl and a German boy during World War II. Marie-Laure lives in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where her father works. When the Nazis occupy Paris, they flee to Saint-Malo, carrying a potentially dangerous jewel. Meanwhile, in a German mining town, orphaned Werner Pfennig grows up with his sister, captivated by a radio that brings them news from distant places. Werner's talent for building and repairing radios leads him to be recruited to track down the resistance. As their paths converge, the novel explores the resilience of the human spirit and the capacity for kindness amidst devastation. With exquisite detail and lyrical prose, the author captures the essence of their struggles and the beauty of their connection. This deeply moving narrative, a decade in the making, showcases a writer whose sentences resonate with emotion and clarity, making it a remarkable addition to contemporary literature.

This one was a bit of a letdown for me. The beginning and ending were fine, but everything in between dragged. I also found the time jumps distracting—I'd have preferred a more straightforward, chronological story.
