More about the book
Jamaica, 1897 Emma Delaney lives with her aunt and uncle, owners of a wealthy plantation, after the death of her parents. When her relatives announce an arranged marriage to the richest man on the island, Oliver Foy, she is not particularly upset, having known him as a sensitive and pleasant man. However, her marriage to Oliver quickly turns into a nightmare, as no one, not even her only friend, Chinese fisherman Daniel, nor her relatives, realize that Oliver is a monster who tortures his wife. One night, as a hurricane sweeps across the island, Emma decides to escape from her husband. The situation spirals out of control, and in self-defense, Daniel kills Oliver. They must flee by boat and hide forever, adopting new identities and names. They fish off the coast of distant islets, finding a semblance of happiness while avoiding thoughts of the future. Yet, fate is inescapable. Their idyllic life at sea ends when they are shipwrecked during a dangerous storm, and Daniel sacrifices his life to save Emma. The escape from their cursed past continues…
