Faith Usher is a woman with a morbid personality: she carries a vial of cyanide in her purse and tells everyone she wants to end her life. She confides this to Archie Goodwin, the loyal assistant of the legendary Nero Wolfe, whom she meets at a party. Archie's instincts sense something is off, and he resolves to keep an eye on her. Shortly thereafter, Faith collapses, killed by a poisoned champagne glass, further solidifying Archie's suspicions. No one seems to doubt that Faith intended to carry out her grim intentions. Now, it falls to Archie and his boss, the famous orchid-growing detective, to prove that it was murder.
