More about the book
Marian Goodman Gallery is excited to present the inaugural historical exhibition of Multiples, Inc., the art publishing company established in the 1960s by Marian Goodman and partners. Curated by Dieter Schwarz, the exhibition runs from January 12 to February 27, 2021, and is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue of the editions. Over nearly three decades, from 1966 to 1992, Multiples, Inc. produced significant editions with some of the 20th century's most influential artists. This exhibition features a selection of over 150 editions created in collaboration with more than 70 artists, showcasing a diverse range of media, including objects, works on Plexiglas, jewelry, furniture, prints, portfolios, and artist books. Founded in 1965 in New York by five partners, some of whom had previously worked on editioned banners with contemporary artists, Multiples, Inc. opened its first gallery on Madison Avenue, displaying its own editions alongside those from other U.S. and European publishers. The first portfolio, Four on Plexiglas, was published in 1966, featuring works by Philip Guston, Barnett Newman, Claes Oldenburg, and Larry Rivers. The exhibition highlights the innovative spirit and collaborative nature of Multiples, Inc.
