A Place to Stay

Authors

More about the book

This work explores the unique character and life of a place through the perspectives of designers on the ground. It documents the efforts of designers who immersed themselves in the former penal colony of Veenhuizen, soon to be a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The book illustrates the experiences gained and lessons learned through numerous design projects and events, serving as a blueprint for creative research in specific areas. Young designers, prisoners, policy-makers, and others collaborated in Veenhuizen, inspired by its rich cultural, historical, and architectural context. Initiated by embedded design pioneer KETTER&Co and guided by Design Academy Eindhoven, this collaboration involved local authorities and prison management in drafting an ambitious 'Design Deal.' Together, they tackled local development challenges through a long-term process that examined various perspectives on Veenhuizen's past and present. Their work contributed to a revised vision that is local, social, and shaped by stakeholder engagement, impacting visibility and policy. The proposals aimed to enhance commercial opportunities, foster community, and promote sustainable heritage management, ultimately revitalizing this remarkable cultural landscape.
