More about the book
This magazine delves into two contrasting urbanized shallow water territories: Markermeer/IJsselmeer in the Netherlands, known for its technological control, and the Venetian Lagoon, which balances natural water cycles with tourism. These case studies prompt reflection on similar regions facing the challenges of rising sea levels and the implications for human and ecological cohabitation, engineering, economy, and social and ecological metabolisms. BIO Bureau LADA (Landscape, Architecture, Design, Action) is an interdisciplinary studio based in Amsterdam, focusing on architecture and active in Amsterdam, Venice, and Cairo. Founded in 2010 by architect Lada Hr'ak, the studio emphasizes design strategy, social ecology, and educational futures, collaborating with experts in ecology, science, art, heritage, and sociology. Their research initiative, Shallow Waters, was featured in the Parallel Program of the Dutch pavilion at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennial. The team involved in this project includes Ludovica Beltrami, Juliette Gilson, Lada Hr'ak, Zoe Panayi, Simone Spiga, and Zhao Zhou.
