Tadeusz Mazowiecki (1927–2013), the first non-communist prime minister of Poland after World War II, was a significant figure in Polish public life during the latter half of the twentieth century. The current volume focuses on his time as prime minister and is divided into two parts. The first includes texts and documents from 1989–1990, the period of his government or just prior. The second features later interviews and reflective articles in which Mazowiecki continued to address the decisions he made as prime minister, often revealing previously unknown circumstances. His government established the foundations for a new Polish state, transitioning the nation from authoritarianism to democracy and its economy from systemic poverty to a free market. While these reforms were not flawless, they were revolutionary and implemented through an evolutionary process. The fifteen months of his leadership initiated strategic changes across all sectors of Polish life, though not all were completed during his tenure.
