This work examines trauma and violence in coming-of-age stories by African-American and Afro-Caribbean women authors in the U.S. It analyzes how racism, sexism, and classism intersect in their narratives. The authors adapt the Bildungsroman genre to depict the struggles of growing up female and black, challenging traditional representations.
