Petr Izmailov emerged as a prominent chess player in the Soviet Union during the late 1920s, achieving significant accolades such as winning the 1928 Championship of Soviet Russia and reaching the semifinals of the 1929 Soviet Championship. Notably, he maintained an undefeated record against the legendary Botvinnik. A regular victor in regional championships, Izmailov was also an innovator in chess openings, notably employing a variation of the Makogonov Attack against the King's Indian well before it became widely recognized.
