Carter Godwin Woodson was a pioneering African American historian and journalist, recognized as the "father of black history." He founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History and launched "Negro History Week" in 1926, which evolved into Black History Month. Born to former slaves in Virginia, Woodson worked in coal mines before earning his degree from Berea College, eventually becoming a teacher and school administrator. His contributions significantly shaped the study of African-American history and the recognition of its importance.
