More about the book
Robert Lyall's life is a fascinating journey marked by his roles as a surgeon, botanist, and British Agent in Madagascar. Growing up in politically charged Scotland, he studied medicine across Europe and became a vocal advocate for political reform. His appointment in Madagascar in 1827, however, led to conflicts with the local crown and queen Ranavalona I, culminating in accusations of sorcery and his eventual exile to Mauritius, where he tragically died of malaria in 1831. The book delves into themes of colonialism, personal ambition, and the clash of cultures.
