A prominent figure in the Social Gospel movement, Washington Gladden was a Congregational pastor and a key player in the Progressive Movement. His advocacy for unionization and opposition to racial segregation marked him as a pioneering religious leader. Gladden served on the Columbus city council and took a stand against political corruption. Despite lacking a formal theological education, he was a prolific writer, producing numerous poems, hymns, and articles, and was awarded 35 honorary doctorates throughout his career.
