An influential figure in early 20th-century American literature, Cabell was known for his fantasy fiction and contributions to prominent magazines. After starting his career as a newspaper reporter in New York, he returned to Richmond and published numerous stories in national outlets. His extensive research into genealogy complemented his literary pursuits. In the 1920s, Cabell led a notable group of writers, known as "The James Branch Cabell School," which included significant literary figures like H. L. Mencken and Elinor Wylie.
