After being raised by his grandparents, he enlisted in the Army, quickly marrying Ada before being deployed to India and China for six years. Their brief time together was overshadowed by tragedy, as Ada died young, and he lost his children to relatives. Ultimately, he lived a solitary life as a "gentleman of the road," passing away on a park bench near the graves of his loved ones.
