Set in 19th century Paris, the story follows Justin Trotter, an immigrant and book translator, who becomes embroiled in a murder mystery after attending a masquerade party. Ghostly apparitions warn him of impending danger, and following a murder at the event, he finds himself accused and on the run, hiding in the catacombs. Guided by the spirits of historical figures, including Joan of Arc, Justin strives to clear his name and protect his blind sister from a malevolent caretaker. The narrative explores themes of sanity, guilt, and the supernatural.
