The narrative follows Laura Wheeler Waring, an African-American artist in the late 19th century, who struggled to find representation in the art world. Studying in Paris, she drew inspiration from Matisse and Gaugin to create portraits of the people she knew. Commissioned by the Harmon Foundation, her work celebrated accomplished African-Americans and now resides in Washington DC's National Portrait Gallery, showcasing the beauty of diverse skin tones and inspiring future generations.
