Set in the early 1960s, the story follows Ray Elias, a withdrawn teenager who finds inspiration in Senator Hubert Humphrey after the assassination of President Kennedy. Determined to make Humphrey the vice presidential nominee, Ray's ambition leads him to a mentorship with the senator. However, their relationship strains when Humphrey publicly supports the Vietnam War. As Ray grapples with disillusionment, he learns empathy from a spirited classmate, Ruth. Their eventual reconciliation reflects the emotional complexities of hero worship amid a turbulent political landscape.
