The Assyrian community, primarily Christian, practices distinct liturgical rites, including East and West Syrian traditions, utilizing Classical Syriac in worship. Recent conflicts, particularly post-2003 Iraq War and the Syrian Civil War, have led to significant displacement due to ethnic and religious persecution by Islamic extremists. Despite constituting only about 3% of Iraq's population, Assyrians represent nearly 40% of the one million Iraqis who have sought refuge abroad since the onset of these conflicts.
