The development of a statistical graphics package began with a seminar on quantitative graphics, leading to the creation of SYSTAT in the 1980s. Initially designed to encompass a wide range of statistical visuals, the program evolved in the 1990s to utilize object-based technology, enhancing its functionality and reducing code size. A collaboration in the late 1990s resulted in the Graphics Production Library (GPL) in Java, aimed at creating graphics components.
