A Vocabulary of Powhatan

Authors

More about the book

The vocabulary features 109 entries from the Powhatan language, gathered during Captain John Smith's 1606 voyage. Additionally, it includes rare word lists from two other Virginia languages: 17 words from the King William County Pamunkey, recorded in 1858, and six words from the Nansemond language, documented from its last speaker in 1907. An introduction by Powhatan scholar Frederic Gleach adds scholarly context to the collection, enhancing its significance in preserving these indigenous languages.
