Set during the early days of the Civil War, a young boy named Danny Sims yearns to join the Fifty-Fourth Massachusetts Infantry but is hindered by his age and a lame foot. Instead, he is assigned as the caretaker for Colonel Shaw's horses, a role he takes seriously. When he inadvertently finds himself inside a Confederate fort, Danny discovers a plot that could endanger his regiment.
