An accomplished artist, he showcased his watercolors at the Royal Scottish Academy. He began his literary journey with "Hudson's Bay: or, Life in the Wilds of North America" in 1848, later leaving his publishing job to concentrate on writing. Ballantyne is best remembered for his engaging adventure stories aimed at young readers, which solidified his reputation in children's literature.
