More about the book
The Korean War stands as America's seminal conflict, marking the first engagement under the United Nations, the first against Chinese Communists, and the first war we did not win. This ongoing tension, particularly with North Korea, has heightened uncertainty across the globe. I designed the mural wall at the Korean Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and my experiences in South Korea, including discussions with locals and visits to the DMZ, shaped my understanding of this war's legacy. The narrative explores themes of death, rescue, and growth, reflecting on the chaotic nature of democracy and the beauty found within its imperfections. The book delves into the impact of the Korean War on veterans and my design of its memorial, highlighting the stories of those involved and the nation's vulnerability. It emphasizes the importance of remembering this often-overlooked conflict, positioning Korea as a "tipping point" in American history. The memorial honors the service of soldiers rather than political leaders, with the wall of faces and statues capturing their determination. As Korea faded from memory amid Cold War distractions, this memorial stands as a tribute to the common soldier, bridging the legacies of Lincoln and Vietnam. The pages recount the contributions of key figures and the stark contrast between the oppressive regime in the North and the thriving democracy in the South, underscoring the enduring significance
