How did an East End cockney, brought up as a communist, who worked with Birmingham motorcycle gangs and lived with hippies in San Francisco, eventually become a bishop in the Church of England? This book tells the story of a life peppered with hilarious episodes and self-doubt. It begins with his work in a jellied-eel factory, later singing in the clubs of New York, and eventually as an inner-city parish priest, as a teacher of theology, and finally as an Essex bishop. He came to believe in a Christianity that challenges injustice, champions the marginalised, and jettisons illogical concepts of God.
