He finds refuge with FATHER BARNABUS in Koln, where his faith deepens under the priest's guidance. Fearing Otto's discovery, Mathias hides on a ship to America, landing in New Orleans, where he meets KARL VON MULLER. As he navigates this new life filled with challenges, Mathias wrestles with guilt over leaving Anna Marie and questions God's goodness. Following Karl to Charles Town to work in boat building, Mathias finds friendship and eventually marries the enchanting ANNA ALSTED. However, the past resurfaces when Otto reappears in their town. Just before fleeing Lake Charles with his family, Mathias receives a letter from Anna Marie, leading to their long-awaited reunion. Yet, the origins of the historical abuse remain shrouded in mystery for Grace.
