In 1899, John Venner, born Giovanni Vener, was committed to the Vernon County Insane Asylum, where he recorded diary entries addressed to his deceased wife. In his diary, John reflected on his life as an artist, immigrant, farmer, husband and father, and community leader. Other sections of the book trace the history of John's town of Genoa, Wisconsin through the 20th century to the present day and the genealogy of John's wife, Mary Madeline Starlochi
