The daughter of an Anglican rector, she grew up in a family with strong religious ties, including her sister Maud Ballington Booth, a prominent Salvation Army leader. After marrying Rev. Charles W. Barclay, the couple honeymooned in the Holy Land, where they famously discovered Jacob's Well, a significant biblical site. Barclay's life experiences deeply influenced her writing, infusing her works with themes of love and spirituality.
