More about the book

Steve Files and his talking Beagle, Singer, are amateur paranormal investigators in Everly. Initially skeptical about ghosts, Steve, a building contractor, begins his investigations at Singer's urging. During a visit to Marsha Wool's Victorian mansion, they encounter a glowing orb in the basement. Feeling overwhelmed, Steve seeks help from his neighbor Doyle, a hesitant medium who must quickly educate him about the paranormal, fearing Marsha might be possessed. Complicating matters, a mysterious stone obelisk appears in Marsha's yard, witnessed by Jeff and Eugene, two squirrels running a message delivery service. Following misguided advice, Steve and Doyle accidentally burn down Marsha's house, leading to a crater that disrupts the town cemetery. Doyle enlists his brother Jim, another medium, and calls in Pat, a professor, to help decipher the obelisk's markings. With the right knowledge, they manage to free Marsha from possession, but the damage to their town remains. Doyle identifies the demon as the Scratch, an adversary he has faced before. As the Scratch wreaks havoc, Steve, Doyle, Marsha, and Singer must confront this ancient threat to save their town from destruction.
