Essie makes the decision to venture out in pursuit of vengeance and justice following the death of her family by a group of thugs in the sparsely populated prairie of Idaho. She enlists Colorado, the son of the sheriff, along with Joe and Tucker, their two closest friends, to assist her on her adventure. Essie learns that she might be able to put the pieces of her broken life back together and that family can be more than what you are born with while pursuing the killers across the border into Montana. She embarks on a trip through the novel, discovering acceptance, bravery, and love.
