More about the book

Lenovo is a global leader in the PC market, employing over 19,000 people worldwide. Its acquisition of IBM’s PC division in May 2005 marked a significant milestone for the company and a major advancement for Chinese industry, showcasing that Chinese firms can compete on a global scale. Founded in 1984 by 11 engineers in Beijing, Lenovo aimed to provide affordable PCs to the Chinese population. Initially branded as Legend, the company promoted PC usage in China and developed the groundbreaking Legend Chinese character card, which translated English software into Chinese. In 1994, Legend was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and rebranded as Lenovo in 2003. By 2004, Lenovo commanded over 25% of the Chinese market. The IBM acquisition further strengthened its position, with annual reserves exceeding $13 billion and the infrastructure to expand globally. Lenovo is also a worldwide sponsor of the International Olympic Committee, supporting the 2006 Winter Games in Torino and the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. Author Ling Zhijun is recognized for his insights on China’s economic reform, while translator Martha Avery has translated numerous works of Chinese literature into English. Avery, based in Boulder, Colorado, frequently travels to China as a business consultant.
