More about the book
Germany in the 16th century. In a wealthy merchant family, twins Sibylla and Helena are born. At that time, twins are believed to bring misfortune. When the two predict their father's death at the age of five, their mother sends Helena to a convent. Life becomes increasingly difficult for Sibylla without her sister, and when the Dominicans initiate another witch hunt against dissenters, she sees only one way out: she must leave home. The girl apprentices with a midwife and soon becomes her most talented student. However, trouble looms again. Sibylla is summoned by a wealthy lord to help free his daughter from an unwanted "burden." The lord is captivated by the headstrong girl, who behaves quite differently from other young women of her time. He falls in love with her, and she becomes something of his confidante. Yet, in these times, knowing the secrets of the powerful is dangerous. Sibylla is arrested by the Inquisition's henchmen, and this time, it seems no one can help her... A grand historical novel about a woman who shares her fate with many of her contemporaries yet remains unique.
