With its scenic beauty and myth-enshrouded past, the Rhine has always been a popular subject in art and literature. One of the longest rivers in Europe, it inspired the masters of medieval panel painting as well as the Romanticists and the representatives of the classic modern era and contemporary art. Between 2012 and 2014, the photographer Michael Lange devoted his attention to the waters of the Upper Rhine.
In der unmittelbaren Nachwendezeit war Ost-Berlin ein riesiger Möglichkeitsraum: Ein Stadtzentrum voller Brachen und leer stehender Gebäude, in dem es jede Menge Platz für alternative Nutzungen gab. Während temporäre Clubs und Galerien Freiräume nutzten, kündeten zahllose Baustellen vom Wandel. Nach und nach verschwanden die Relikte der Vorwendezeit aus dem Stadtbild und die Zeichen des Neuen traten deutlich hervor. Der Fotograf Michael Lange hat dieses Berlin der 90er in seinen Bildern festgehalten - heute ist er an die Orte zurückgekehrt. Wie tiefgreifend sich die Stadt in den letzten 20 Jahren verändert hat, zeigt Lange in erstaunlichen Gegenüberstellungen.
The forest is the setting for myths and fairy tales and has been a favorite subject in art and literature from time immemorial. Over a period of three years, Michael Lange (*1953 in Heidelberg) wandered through Germany's vast deciduous and coniferous forests, taking pictures with a sure sense of the places where childhood memories and sober documentations of nature blur. The mysterious photographs were taken off the beaten path, in the thickets and underbrush, at dusk or twilight. What was decisive for the cycle was the question of how the nature of stillness can be depicted in an image. The finest of nuances, shadows, and color gradients create thickly atmospheric compositions of concentrated clarity, conveying an experience characterized by the German Romantic word Waldeinsamkeit (woodland solitude). This publication traces the artist's photographic tracks.
