Prinses Tereza van Francalanza is zojuist overleden. De oudste, maar weinig geliefde zoon zal de erfenis moeten delen met zijn broer, moeders oogappel, die feestend en gokkend het kapitaal van zijn familie én van zijn vrouw verkwist. Met deze ongebruikelijke bepaling in haar testament overtreedt de gierige en sluwe prinses de regel dat er altijd maar één erfgenaam is. Door de verwikkelingen rond het testament raakt de familie Uzeda verdeeld, met vooral de broer van de overledene, een in weelde badende benedictijn, als een geboren intrigant. De onderkoningen is een van de grootste klassieken in de Italiaanse literatuur. Nella bottega del caffè si nasconde una vena scientifico-filosofica caratteristica del diciottesimo secolo e non manca quel doppio livello di lettura, quell'aspetto metateatrale che più volte si ritrova nel Goldoni.
