Moses Hadas

    June 25, 1900 – August 17, 1966

Moses Hadas was an American teacher and one of the leading classical scholars of the twentieth century. He combined his extensive knowledge of languages with a popularizing impulse to challenge prevailing classical methods focused on textual criticism and grammar. Hadas presented classical works, even in translation, as literary art worthy of study. His approach, akin to New Criticism, was also utilized in television and radio, making classical literature accessible to a wider audience.

The miracle of Greece is not single but first the unrivaled rapidity and variety and quality of its achievement, and then its success in permeating and imposing its values upon alien civilizations. What combination of factors gave rise to the first we can only speculate; for the second we have tangible evidence. In this book, Moses Hadas sets forth and illustrates some of the ways in which Greek modes of thought, Greek taste, and Greek ideals became part of the continuing European heritage.
