Günter Brus

    September 27, 1938 – February 10, 2024

Günter Brus, a co-founder of Viennese Actionism, is renowned for his aggressively presented performance art that intentionally defied conventions and taboos. His early works often featured narrative depictions of his performances and fantasies, characterized by a stark Expressionism. In his later writings, Brus evolved this style into a more romantic Expressionism, frequently employing the format of the fairy tale. Through this approach, he explored the shared intention between the enchantment found in journey-themed tales and the liturgical mythology present in performance art, lending his work a unique and compelling quality.

The catalogue brings all the graphic works of Günter Brus: from the early spirit duplicates for announcements concerning the Direct Art Festival (1967), via the silkscreens of the 1970s, the cyclical etchings of the 1980s and 1990s, up to the large body of works of the 2000s. The dry points, in particular, reflect continuation of his actionist working methods: the injuring of the metal surface, the restless working to the point of exhaustion, the intensity of the gestural handwriting. With works from five decades, the book offers a retrospective of his work and a display of the artist’s development from actionist to picture poet, as reflected in the graphic works. Text: Günter Brus, Roman Grabner, Peter Peer, Kurt Zein
