Georg Groddeck, a pioneering figure in psychosomatic medicine, explored the interplay between psychological and physical health, particularly through his own experiences with illness. His 1917 work emphasized the need for psychoanalytic approaches in treating organic diseases, merging natural therapies with psychoanalytic and hypnotic techniques. Groddeck's methods, including baths, massages, and dietary regimens, continue to be utilized today, despite some of his more radical theories being reconsidered. Unlike Freud, he focused primarily on chronic illnesses, establishing himself as a unique voice in psychoanalysis.

He delves into the instinctual drives that societal conventions suppress, revealing how understanding these hidden impulses can lead to personal liberation. Groddeck's ideas, which notably influenced Freud, aim to illuminate the motivations that shape individual personalities. This reprint includes a new introduction by Ashley Montagu, enhancing the original 1961 edition's insights.

And then - I give him a massage, make exercises with him, give a daily bath to the leg with water at 45C for half an hour and I take care that he does neither gorge nor booze, and every now and then I ask Why did you break your leg...?"
