Carlo Michelstaedter

    June 3, 1887 – October 17, 1910

Carlo Michelstaedter, an Italian philosopher and man of letters, is celebrated for his profound inquiries into the nature of life and persuasion. His thought appears to have coalesced suddenly, a testament to his brief yet intense existence. Michelstaedter viewed ordinary life as an illusion, a construct perpetuated by the 'god of pleasure' which masks superficial desires and illusory outcomes. He saw social existence as defined by rhetoric and convention, alienating individuals from both nature and their true selves. Genuine liberation and self-possession, termed 'Persuasion,' can only be achieved by living in the present as if each moment were the last. For him, resignation and conformity to the world represented a true death.
