More about the book

In Jamaica, May 1762, Lord John Grey cautiously examines a pot of whale oil, which his valet, Tom Byrd, warns will attract flies if used on the skin. Despite the oil's pungent nature, it’s cheaper than tallow candles, and Tom notes it’s easier to find than bear grease. Grey, contemplating the potential consequences of using it, recalls the nuisance of Jamaican flies compared to the more aggressive insects in North America. He decides against attending a celebration basted in whale oil, hoping to find bear grease in South Carolina instead. Tom suggests sweet oil, but they both shudder at the thought of spiders attracted to it, recalling a previous incident involving a banana spider at a garden party. They share a laugh over the memory of Mr. Braythwaite's horrified reaction. Just then, the sound of a carriage interrupts their moment. Realizing the disarray of his office is not fit for the incoming governor, Grey asks Tom to distract him with rum while he tidies up. As Tom leaves, Grey prepares to manage the chaos in his office, reflecting on the impending transition of power.
