More about the book

The central story of Shakespeare's tragedy "Antony and Cleopatra" revolves around the romance between Mark Antony, a Roman military leader, and Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt and former lover of the late Julius Caesar. Set against a political backdrop, the Roman Triumvirate governs the western world, comprising Octavius (Julius Caesar's heir), Mark Antony, and Lepidus. When Lepidus abandons the Triumvirate, Octavius and Mark Antony are left to lead the Roman Empire. Mark Antony, however, resides in Egypt with Cleopatra and only returns to Rome after the death of his wife, Fulvia. Octavius, disapproving of Antony's life in Egypt, persuades him to marry his sister, Octavia, also Julius Caesar's daughter. Yet, Mark Antony returns to Cleopatra, provoking Octavius to wage war against Egypt, culminating in the tragic suicide of the two lovers. Written in 1607, "Antony and Cleopatra" features mature characters and explores themes of passion, politics, and the delicate balance between the two.
