Born into slavery in Maryland around 1817, Frederick Douglass became a prominent abolitionist after escaping in 1838. His early education in Baltimore, aided by his master's wife, fueled his passion for literacy and activism. Douglass captivated audiences with his oratory skills, leading to his employment by the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. He played a crucial role during the Civil War, advocating for the rights of freedmen and recruiting Black soldiers. His legacy includes several autobiographies detailing his journey, culminating in a life dedicated to social justice until his death in 1895.
