The story follows Razumou, an orphan who believes all of Russia is his family, as he navigates the turbulent political landscape during a time of revolution. Initially choosing neutrality amidst his classmates' fervent revolutionary sentiments, he faces a moral dilemma when Haldin, a classmate involved in a political assassination, seeks refuge with him. As guilt and paranoia set in, Razumou grapples with his identity and the consequences of aiding Haldin, ultimately confronting the conflict between loyalty and betrayal.
